Playful mix of warm and cool, modern and vintage
Wall color Benjamin Moore Calm

My client saw these rust colored bed linens and had to have them! She knew she also wanted a vertical channeled headboard—but otherwise, the room was a blank slate.

This concept shows that mixing warm and cool, modern and vintage can create a balanced, restful sanctuary on a budget.

The design process:

  • Found a cream colored headboard she loved. This one is from Wayfair
  • Surrounded the warm central colors with pale grays for a balanced palette
    • I suggested Benjamin Moore Calm for its cool lavender undertones and soothing quality,
    • A basic twill rug grounds the bed and lends softness underfoot
  • Flanked the bed with matching white nightstands for symmetry and function. The legless base is visually pleasing and the minimal design keeps the focus on the art
  • Assembled a collection of vintage art that echoed the warm tones in the bedding and added intrigue and romance
  • Added mismatched lighting—one for ambiance and another for reading

The rust and reds shine but don’t overwhelm when surrounded by cool grays and whites.

The result is an elegant and colorful bedroom that is both inviting and calm, anchored in the past and dreaming of the future.
